Men always loitered around the house, but not everybody could get there. First it was a narrow circle of the select who were admitted only on code words only, later the notoriety spread through the city. Men had their secret place. The interiors still preserve Yesenin’s talks with women he met there. He was lustful and always on the lookout for a new one. He seems to have been the most insatiable guest who frequented there. It is here that he would jump up from the sheet and write verses on the October Revolution, devoted to one of the women the poem “A Hoodlum’s Love”. Paper and ink were always ready for him there. He might even be there before his death and had he spent a little more time, the sense of anxiety and unrest would surely have abandoned him. Mayakovsky would lose no chance to saunter along the heavy corridors and linger in the girls’ quarters as well. It is here that fate made him encounter Elza, sister of Lilya Brik’s. It was between them that an easy affair arose, but Elza was satisfied with her double life and such sexual fickleness and she brought Mayakovsky and Lilya together. Although the latter nurtured a long relationship, Mayakovsky had slight affairs on the side and did not forget his favorite house in Marata Street. Turgenev in his final years of life would continue to admire “Turgenev’s girls” here. Shostakovich was fond of playing the piano naked in the main hall composing new symphonies. Checkov was often seen on the balcony with just a towel on, it was easier for him, for he resided in this home and could drop in for a break. People repeatedly got acquainted, met, parted, fell in love, bantered, invariably boozed and fell into embraces, kisses. During revolutions the girls would trade their caresses and love for tinned meat. Here the reds and the whites did not see each other, for the girls put blindfolds on them as if playing. Nowadays this low-key and lesser-known place which has preserved all the atmosphere of passion and intrigue is still guarded by beautiful ladies dressed in 19th century costumes. Stained-glass sparkles on skirts, the interior prompts one to delve into each of the rooms in which many amused themselves and fell in love. Possibly the history lacks it, but we know and preserved their names in the thick guests’ book such as were kept until the end of the 20th century.
